Christoff von Sherer

Born 1885 in Tiegenhof, Prussia.

Graduated Preußische Kriegsakademie, 1906

Appointed Leutnant in Der Deutsches Heer (German Army) 1906 Volunteers for Colonial overseas Duty.

Awarded the Iron Cross 1st class 1910 for action in German South West Africa against Herero Natives. Promoted to Oberleutnant.

Joins Oberstleutnant Paul Von Lettow-Vorbeck command in 1914 at the outbreak of the First World War. Promoted to Hauptmann.

Fought through the entire African campaign with distinction. Awarded Der Orden Pour LeMerit after the Battle of Mahiwa in 1917. Promoted to Major.

Returned to Germany 1919 after the Armistice, with the intention of joining the Zeppelin branch of the Army. However, with the Treaty of Versailles outlawing German military use of zeppelins, Major von Sherer applied for assignment to the Zeppelin Company as a military attache. Given his extensive overseas experience, Dr. Hugo Eckener requested the German military assign Major von Sherer as the new Executive Officer for Der Fliegende Igel, with an immediate promotion to Oberstleutnant.
